Thousands descended on Scarborough
Published:  22 July, 2008

THOUSANDS of fish lovers descended on Scarborough at the weekend for the port's annual maritime Seafest.

The international event attracted a huge influx of visitors to witness the best the East Yorkshire fishing port had to offer in the way of seafood, fishing and cookery demonstrations.

Events co-ordinator Debby Burman said the organisers had successfully brought in more activities to appeal to a wider audience on a bigger scale.

One of the most popular attractions was a Seafood Kitchen, sponsored by the Yorkshire & Humber Seafood Group, which gave new ideas on how to cook the types of fish caught off the East Yorkshire Coast.

Seafest is a unique annual festival with fishing and the sea at its heart which takes place at West Pier and around the harbour area of this premier seaside resort and fishing port in North Yorkshire. It celebrates the region's connection to fishing and Yorkshire Coast maritime heritage. Each year it hosts the region's biggest gathering of folk singers, shantymen and musicians . Lindy Rowley, one of Seafest organisers, said: "It has been really busy and there has been loads of interest."

In addition there is a 'Sea Fish Cookery' marquee where visiting chefs demonstrate the art of seafood preparation. The sound of shanties and folk music were heard in the unique atmosphere of local alehouses. Scarborough is still the base for a number of conventional trawlers and, along with Bridlington, is also growing in importance as a shell fish port.
