Now Simpson's Seafish is planning to treble its exports by selling more smoked fish to one of the world's booming economies. Over the last five years, Simpson's Seafish has been exporting smoked fish worth more than £175,000 each year to supermarkets in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Simpson's send their smoked cod and coley to Brazil in bulk where it is packed by the supermarkets themselves.

Dean Simpson, managing director of Simpson's Seafish, said: 'Research from the British Embassy in Brazil has shown smoked fish sales are booming along with the general economy which is one of the world's fastest growing. We plan to treble our sales over the next two years by supplying our smoked Cod and Coley to more regions of Brazil. We're in discussions to pack the fish in Hull and add the Regional Food Group for Yorkshire and Humber 'Delicious Yorkshire' logo to every pack to celebrate our roots.' Simpson's say they are focusing their energies on the export and frozen side of the business.

With the price, convenience and waste benefits of frozen food now being recognised during the credit crunch, frozen fish is making a comeback with sales and growth outstripping fresh.

The company is capitalising on this by launching frozen sea bass, smoked coley, halibut and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) hake at the turn of the year.
