MORE than 450 exhibitors from around 20 countries will be participating in one of Europe's key fishing exhibitions which opens in the Norwegian city of Trondheim today.
will also receive a royal sea of approval with Crown Prince Haaken of Norway opening the four day event. The Norwegian royal family is closely associated with the fishing industry and the Crown Prince has launched two previously seafood exhibitions in recent years.
The Norwegian fishing industry is generally in good shape with fish farming setting new record every year and exporting a major proportion of its production to the UK.Norway's Fisheries Minister Ms Helga Pedersen indicated that the event will give her a chance to meeting fishing representatives from neighbouring countries to talk over common problems.
She said: 'For years, I have been concerned with the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fisheries. This is a big problem in international fisheries, including Norway. By reducing illegal fishing, we ensure that legal fishing gets larger quotas and better economic results. In addition, it is of course extremely important that we control what is taken out of the sea so that we can implement a better, more sustainable management of the fisheries resources. Last year illegal catches in the Barents Sea were reduced to 40,000 tonnes compared to 100,000 tonnes in 2006.'
Ms Pedersen added: 'Within The North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission we have managed to create an entirely new scheme for Port State Control for fisheries, an important development in this battle.'
