Marine Conservation Society publishes advice on fish sustainability
Published:  05 September, 2008

The Marine Conservation Society has just published its latest advice to consumers on fish sustainability with a warning about buying North Sea cod which they remains endangered.

The results which lists those it recommends to eat, and those they say consumers should not eat rules out cod unless it comes from the North East. Arctic cod from the North Sea is certainly out and the society has also warned against haddock from the Faroes and Dover sole beam-trawled from the Irish Sea. But pollock, used increasingly by UK seafood producers is fine.

The MCS said it was concerned that inadequate labelling on many seafood products will still lead to some confusion amongst shoppers and has also criticised fishmongers, supermarkets and restaurants for failing to label fish adequately to help consumers to make an ethical choice when they shop.

Sam Wilding, the society's fisheries officer, said: 'Labelling of seafood sold in the UK is lacking detail, and as such is not fit for purpose. This is leading to confusion among consumers who really want to make the best sustainable seafood choice. It is vital that consumers are given better information to act upon if we are to reduce the tragedy of overfishing.'

The website (www.fishonline.org) gives advice for almost every variety of fish to be found on sale in the UK. A handy 'MCS Pocket Good Fish Guide' is also available. Using this information, it claims consumers can make a sustainable seafood choice at fish counters, restaurants and other outlets.
