The sustainable future of Scottish seafood will be top of the agenda as cabinet secretary for rural Aafairs, Richard Lochhead attends a lunch organised by Seafish tomorrow.
The event takes place during Seafood fortnight and follows the announcement of £1.3 million support from the Scottish Government and Seafish for an environmental programme to help boost the value and reputation of Scottish seafood.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment, Richard Lochhead said: 'As part of our developing national food and drink policy, we want the freshest, finest future for Scottish seafood. We have a reputation for some of the finest seafood in the world and are keen to build on this reputation further. We have already allocated £300,000 to Seafood Scotland alongside Seafish support of £1 million, to help boost the reputation and value of Scottish seafood.
'The Scottish government is determined to help the fishing industry particularly in these times of high fuel costs. Although we cannot control the price of fuel, we are doing what we can to help in other ways. This support for Seafood Scotland forms part of a wide range of measures totalling almost £29 million which will help deliver a sustainable future for the fishing industry.
'I am grateful to Seafish's contribution to the Fuel Task Force so far and we will continue to work closely together to implement the fuel action plan over the coming months.'
Should fisheries be closed during breeding time to allow stocks to reach more sustainable levels?
