NORWEGIAN fish and seafood exports soared to a record 17.8-billion kroners (about £1.7-billion sterling) in the first half of this year, according to the latest figures from Statistics Norway. But shipments to Britain are down.
This is 57 million kroners (£5.7-million) above the record set in 2007, says the Norwegian Seafood Export Council. By comparison with the same period last year, the biggest increases in exports in the first half of 2008 have been to the markets in Poland, Russia, Nigeria and Ukraine. Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market information and market access with the Norwegian Seafood Export Council said: 'While we have noted a decline in demand for clipfish in Portugal as a result of weakening purchasing power, this is countered by positive economic developments in Russia that are contributing to increased demand for Norwegian Salmon and Norwegian Fjord Trout.'
He added: "'n addition, there has been a strong increase in exports of herring to Nigeria. This is indicative of a generally strong demand for Norwegian seafood products.'
However, exports of Norwegian salmon during the first half of the year were down. They totalled 8.4 billion kroners, a fall of 187 million kroners compared to the same period in 200, due to a reduction in price. The biggest drop was in exports to Denmark and to Britain which down by 167 million kroners or some £16 million. The markets that showed the biggest increases were to Poland and Russia. Exports of Norwegian salmon increased by 17,000 tonnes when measured in whole fish.
